Cybersecurity Incident in Uttarakhand: Government Websites Restored After Malware Attack

In a significant development for the digital infrastructure of Uttarakhand, major government websites that were temporarily shut down due to a malware attack on the State Data Center have been successfully restored. Government Response
Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, promptly convened a high-level meeting to address the situation. He directed officials to conduct a thorough scanning of the State Data Center and ensure the restoration of all essential websites and online services by the following Monday. The urgency of the situation was underscored by the fact that the malware had affected 11 out of 1,378 machines within the data center.
Nitika Khandelwal, the Director of the Information Technology Development Agency (ITDA), confirmed that while the attack caused significant disruption, there was no loss of data. She reported that the CM Helpline had received approximately 2,034 calls in the two days following the attack, with 1,879 calls returned and over 600 complaints registered.

In light of the incident, Chief Minister Dhami emphasized the need for improved cybersecurity measures. He called for collaboration with leading agencies from the Government of India specializing in Information Technology to enhance the security protocols of the State Data Center. He also stressed the importance of reviewing the performance of the company responsible for technical work within the ITDA, indicating that any negligence would not be tolerated.
