New Health and Care Hub in East Fermanagh: A Promising Development for Local Healthcare
In a significant step towards enhancing healthcare services in East Fermanagh, Health Minister Mike Nesbitt has confirmed that construction on a new health and care hub will commence shortly. This £32 million project, which was initially announced by Nesbitt’s predecessor, Robin Swann, is set to provide vital services to a community of approximately 30,000 residents.
A Long-Awaited Initiative
The announcement of the new health and care hub comes as a relief to many in the Lisnaskea area, who have been facing challenges in accessing timely healthcare services. The facility will support a network of 16 General Practitioners (GPs), significantly improving the availability of medical care in the region. Minister Nesbitt emphasized the importance of this development, stating that it would enhance accessibility and provide a multi-disciplinary approach to healthcare, including services such as podiatry, speech and language therapy, physiotherapy, mental health services, and support for older people.
Addressing Community Concerns
Despite the positive news surrounding the new hub, the local health centre has recently been embroiled in controversy. Last month, it became the target of a harassment campaign, with posters criticizing the quality of care and appointment accessibility being displayed outside the facility. These actions were condemned by medical leaders, including the Royal College of General Practitioners in Northern Ireland (RCGPNI) and the British Medical Association’s Northern Ireland General Practitioners Committee (NIGPC), who expressed concern over the hostile atmosphere created for healthcare staff.
The posters, which labeled the health centre as “not fit for purpose,” highlighted ongoing frustrations within the community regarding the difficulties in securing appointments. The ‘Eamon Keenan Independent 4 Real Change’ group, which shared images of the protest on social media, criticized what they termed “neo-liberalism” and the “creeping privatisation” of healthcare in Northern Ireland.

In light of these events, Minister Nesbitt has voiced his strong support for the healthcare team at the Lisnaskea practice. He condemned the unacceptable behavior directed towards staff and reiterated the need for respect and understanding in the community. "There is no place for such behavior," he stated, emphasizing his commitment to investing in primary care infrastructure to transform health and social care services in Northern Ireland.
The Path Forward

She noted that the new facility would provide an appropriate setting for delivering essential services in South East Fermanagh for many years to come.

With planning permission already secured, the Trust is set to award the construction contract within the next few weeks, with hopes that the facility will be operational by 2026.
