14th Broadstairs Scout Group Receives Generous Donation from Kent Mark Benevolent Fund

A Boost for Local Scouting

The 14th Broadstairs Scout Group has recently been the recipient of a generous donation of £300 from the Kent Mark Benevolent Fund (KMBF), a contribution that will significantly enhance their camping capabilities. This funding comes as part of a match-funding scheme aimed at supporting local community groups and charities.

The donation was presented by KMBF Chair, Fred Brown, and is earmarked for the purchase of new tents, a vital resource for the group that engages in various outdoor activities and camps throughout the year. The St Peter-In-Thanet Lodge of Mark Master Masons, along with three other local Craft Lodges, contributed £150 each, bringing the total funding to an impressive £750 when combined with the KMBF match-funding.

A Grateful Community

Karen Cross, the Group Lead Volunteer, expressed her gratitude, highlighting the serendipitous nature of the donation. “Our Scout Leader, Nigel, had a lucky meeting with Reg Pritchard at the Minster Show in July. Following a bit of banter, he very kindly offered a donation to our Group, but since then he has worked wonders and managed to involve three other lodges,” she said. Cross emphasized the importance of this funding, stating, “We want to say a huge thank you to Reg and the local Freemasons for their very generous donations to the Group, which has enabled us to replace some of our very old camping equipment.”

The KMBF was established with two primary objectives: benevolence and charity. While the former focuses on internal support within the order, the latter aims to assist external good causes, making this donation a perfect example of their charitable mission in action.

Community Engagement and Support

The 14th Broadstairs Scout Group is not the only organization benefiting from community support in the area. Various initiatives are underway to enhance community engagement and wellbeing. For instance, free Women’s Health & Wellbeing workshops are being offered by Aspire Health and Fitness at Broadstairs Library, focusing on topics such as menopause, nutrition, and stress management. These workshops aim to tackle loneliness and promote volunteer participation in the community.

In addition, Chartwell House, a local care home, has partnered with Crossroads Care Kent to provide a dedicated counselling space for carers in Thanet. This initiative aims to support those who play a vital role in the community, offering them a safe and tranquil environment for emotional and practical guidance.

Celebrating Local Achievements

The community spirit in Broadstairs and the surrounding areas is further exemplified by the recognition of local organizations. Academy FM Thanet, a community radio station, has been shortlisted for the 2024 Community Radio Awards, showcasing the talent and dedication of its presenters. Similarly, the Margate RNLI has recently upgraded its launch and recovery tractor, enhancing its lifesaving capabilities.

Moreover, the Margate Flower Club is hosting a Wine and Wisdom Evening, and the Westgate United Services Club has successfully raised funds for Community Kindness Thanet, a project that provides gifts to vulnerable families throughout the year.

Looking Ahead

As the 14th Broadstairs Scout Group prepares to invest in new camping equipment, the support from the Kent Mark Benevolent Fund and local lodges exemplifies the power of community collaboration. This initiative not only enhances the scouting experience for local youth but also fosters a sense of belonging and support within the community.

The ongoing efforts of various organizations in Broadstairs and the surrounding areas highlight the importance of community engagement and the positive impact of charitable contributions. As these initiatives continue to thrive, they pave the way for a more connected and supportive environment for all residents.
