Celebrating a Legacy: Derek Walder’s Retirement from SALTEX
As the countdown to SALTEX 2024 begins, the UK’s premier event for grounds management professionals and volunteers prepares to bid farewell to a true icon of the industry—Derek Walder, affectionately known as ‘Mr SALTEX’. After an impressive 42 years as Operations Manager, Derek will step down following the exhibition on October 30th and 31st at the NEC Birmingham, marking the end of an era for both him and the event.
A Journey Through Six Decades
Derek Walder’s career in horticulture began in the early 1960s, rooted in a passion for the outdoors and a commitment to excellence. His journey commenced as a gardener on a private estate in Sussex, where he honed his skills and deepened his love for landscaping. This passion soon led him to the role of Assistant Head Greenkeeper at a golf course in Hertfordshire, where he learned the intricacies of turf management.
In 1970, Derek took on the role of Grounds Manager at a major sports field complex in Southwest London, a venue that would become famous as the training ground for Wimbledon FC during the legendary “Crazy Gang” era. This pivotal position not only showcased his expertise but also set the stage for his future contributions to the grounds management community.
A Lifelong Commitment to Grounds Management
Derek’s involvement with the Grounds Management Association (GMA) began in 1969 when he joined the then-National Association of Groundsmen. His first encounter with SALTEX came as a volunteer at the exhibition’s original venue in Motspur Park, South West London. After eight years of dedicated service, he transitioned into the role of Operations Manager when the exhibition moved to Windsor Racecourse in 1979. Over the decades, Derek has witnessed and facilitated the evolution of SALTEX, overseeing its transitions to Peterborough and the NEC in Birmingham.
His leadership and commitment to the industry have not gone unnoticed. Derek has held various prestigious positions within the GMA, including General Secretary and Chairman. His contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades, including a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 1988 for his services to groundsmanship. In 2014, he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the GMA Industry Awards and received the ‘Unsung Hero’ award from the Association of Event Organisers. His induction into the GMA Hall of Fame in 2021 further solidified his status as a luminary in the field.
Reflecting on a Remarkable Career
As Derek prepares for retirement, he reflects on his remarkable journey with humility and gratitude. “Looking back at SALTEX, I never imagined that on a cold autumn day in 1979, when we arrived at Windsor Racecourse for the ‘Windsor Exhibition’, I’d still be involved 42 years later,” he shared. His passion for the industry remains palpable, as he recalls the excitement he felt when the doors opened for the first time—a feeling that has never waned.
Derek’s insights into the industry have been invaluable, shaped by his extensive experience as a grounds management professional. He has witnessed firsthand the changes and advancements within the field, ensuring that SALTEX remains relevant and responsive to the needs of its visitors.
A Legacy of Dedication
Geoff Webb, CEO of the GMA, expressed his admiration for Derek’s unwavering dedication. “Derek’s expertise and leadership have played a vital role in shaping the exhibition into the premier platform it is today,” he stated. Webb highlighted Derek’s personal commitment to SALTEX and the incredible amount of voluntary work he has contributed to both the association and the exhibition.
As SALTEX 2024 approaches, the industry will come together to celebrate Derek’s contributions and honor his dedication to grounds management. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of professionals in the field.
