Advancements in Geriatric Psychiatry: Egypt’s Commitment to Elderly Mental Health

In a significant stride towards enhancing mental health services for the elderly, Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population has announced the provision of 15,227 medical services through outpatient clinics dedicated to geriatric psychiatry. These services are offered across 24 specialized centers and hospitals under the General Secretariat for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment, which span various governorates throughout the republic. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the mental health needs of its aging population.

Raising Awareness: World Alzheimer’s Day

In conjunction with World Alzheimer’s Day, celebrated annually on September 21, the General Secretariat for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment organized a scientific day aimed at raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease. This event was held in collaboration with the “Alzheimer’s Egypt” Association at the Princess Fatima Academy for Professional Medical Education. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesperson for the Ministry, emphasized the importance of such initiatives in educating the public about Alzheimer’s, a condition that significantly impacts the elderly.

The scientific day featured discussions on the importance of awareness, risk reduction strategies, and preventive measures against Alzheimer’s disease. It also highlighted the critical role caregivers play in the lives of patients, providing them with the necessary support and understanding to manage the challenges associated with the disease.

Future Developments: Geriatric Psychiatry Hospital in New Alamein City

In a move that reflects the ministry’s ongoing efforts to improve the quality of life for the elderly, plans are underway to establish a dedicated hospital for geriatric psychiatry in the medical city of New Alamein City. This facility is set to accommodate up to 120 beds, providing specialized care for elderly patients suffering from various mental health issues. The establishment of this hospital is a testament to the government’s recognition of the unique mental health challenges faced by the elderly population.

Training and Capacity Building for Healthcare Professionals

Menan Abdel-Maksoud, Secretary-General of the General Secretariat for Mental Health and Addiction Treatment, highlighted the importance of training healthcare professionals in geriatric psychiatry. The department offers numerous activities and courses aimed at equipping doctors, psychologists, social workers, and nurses with the skills necessary to provide high-quality care to elderly patients. Recently, 26 doctors, along with 25 nurses, psychologists, and social workers, received specialized training across 14 hospitals affiliated with the General Secretariat for Mental Health. This initiative is crucial in ensuring that healthcare providers are well-prepared to meet the complex needs of elderly patients.
