Reflections on Nearly Two Decades at the Core of Welsh Business

Reflecting on 19 Years at the CBI: A Journey Through Challenges and Triumphs

After nearly two decades of dedicated service as the Wales Director of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), I find myself at a significant crossroads. As I prepare to embark on a new chapter in my career, I want to take a moment to reflect on my time at the CBI and the myriad experiences that have shaped my journey.

A Rollercoaster of Change

The last 19 years have been nothing short of a rollercoaster for the business community in Wales and across the UK. The landscape has been marked by three monumental events that have profoundly impacted both business and society: the 2008 financial crash, Brexit, and the Covid-19 pandemic. Each of these events brought immense challenges, forcing businesses to adapt and innovate in ways they had never imagined. The pandemic, in particular, not only inflicted economic hardship but also brought unbearable tragedy to many communities, highlighting the fragility of our interconnected world.

Throughout these turbulent times, the CBI has stood as a pillar of support for businesses. Our involvement in the development and implementation of the furlough scheme, along with various policy initiatives, has been instrumental in helping companies navigate these crises. It has been a privilege to play a role in advocating for the interests of Welsh businesses during such trying times.

Navigating Political Landscapes

Working alongside both devolved and UK governments has been one of the most fascinating aspects of my role at the CBI. Over the years, I have witnessed the leadership of eight prime ministers and five first ministers, each bringing their unique styles and approaches to governance. While some politicians have been more effective than others, I have consistently found that most genuinely care about the welfare of Wales and its people.

However, it has also been disheartening to observe the increasing levels of abuse directed at elected officials, particularly women, through social media. This toxic environment raises serious questions about the future of political engagement. It is troubling to think that such hostility could deter capable individuals from pursuing a career in public service. The current climate is a global issue, and it is one that we must collectively address to ensure that politics remains a viable and respected profession.

Celebrating Collaboration and Dedication

Throughout my tenure at the CBI, I have had the privilege of working alongside some truly remarkable individuals. The dedication and commitment of my colleagues have been a constant source of inspiration. Their tireless efforts to tackle the challenges facing businesses in Wales have been nothing short of extraordinary. I have also had the pleasure of engaging with a wide array of stakeholders, whose honesty and integrity have enriched my experience.

Moreover, the public sector officials and government affairs professionals I have encountered are equally passionate about the future of Wales. Their collaborative spirit and commitment to fostering a thriving business environment have been invaluable in our collective efforts to support the Welsh economy.

A Fond Farewell

As I prepare to say goodbye, I am filled with gratitude for the many relationships I have built over the years. My farewell party at ‘The Classroom/Y Dosbarth’ chef training restaurant in Cardiff and Vale College was a heartwarming reminder of the vibrant Welsh business community. The owners, management, and staff of various companies across Wales exemplify the resilience and determination that define our entrepreneurial spirit.

Looking ahead, I am excited to continue my journey in the private sector with Thomas Carroll in a non-executive capacity. Additionally, I am eager to support organizations like Vibe Youth and Gower College in Swansea, which are making a positive impact in our communities.

A Heartfelt Thank You

In closing, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been a part of my journey at the CBI, particularly my dedicated team in Wales. Your support, guidance, and friendship have meant the world to me over the past 19 years. As I move on to new endeavors, I carry with me the lessons learned, the friendships forged, and the unwavering belief in the potential of Welsh businesses to thrive in the face of adversity. Here’s to the future!
