Understanding Zoom Fatigue: The Impact of Video Backgrounds on Mental Exhaustion

In the age of remote work and virtual meetings, many professionals have become all too familiar with the phenomenon known as "Zoom fatigue." This term describes the physical and mental exhaustion that arises from frequent participation in video conference calls. Recent research published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology sheds light on one of the contributing factors to this fatigue: the type of background used during video calls.

The Cognitive Load of Video Backgrounds

Scientists have discovered that video backgrounds, unlike still images or blurred backdrops, continuously present new information that demands a person’s attention and cognitive resources. Lead author Heng Zhang, a researcher at the Nanyang Technological University Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information in Singapore, explains that while static images may initially capture attention, users can gradually shift their focus elsewhere. In contrast, video backgrounds are relentless in their introduction of new stimuli, which can lead to cognitive overload.

This constant influx of information can be particularly taxing during long meetings. The brain is wired to process visual information, and when that information is in motion, it can be challenging to maintain focus on the conversation at hand. This phenomenon contributes significantly to the mental exhaustion many experience after a day filled with video calls.

The Role of Background Choices in Fatigue Levels

The study surveyed over 600 workers aged between 22 and 76 who worked from home approximately three days a week. Participants were asked about their use of virtual backgrounds, categorizing them into static images, blurred images, or video backdrops. The researchers employed a five-point scale to measure various types of fatigue, including general, visual, social, motivational, and emotional fatigue.

The findings revealed that more than 70% of participants used a virtual background during their video calls, with still images being the most popular choice. Among these, nature-themed backgrounds were favored, followed closely by images of interior spaces and workplace settings. Interestingly, those who opted for abstract or light-hearted backgrounds reported lower levels of fatigue compared to their peers using more conventional or serious backgrounds.

Nature-Themed vs. Light-Hearted Backgrounds

The researchers noted that individuals using "funny" backgrounds experienced less video call fatigue than those with nature-themed images. This could be attributed to the fact that humorous backgrounds are often less about impressing colleagues and more about personal expression or lightening the mood. When individuals choose backgrounds that reflect their personality or sense of humor, they may feel less pressure to present a polished image, leading to reduced stress and, consequently, lower fatigue levels.

Zhang elaborated on this point, suggesting that backgrounds depicting office settings or public spaces can inadvertently increase the pressure to self-present as if one were physically in those environments. This added pressure can exacerbate feelings of fatigue, making it crucial for remote workers to carefully consider their virtual backgrounds.

The Ideal Background for Remote Work

Given the findings of the study, it appears that nature-themed backgrounds may strike a balance between professionalism and relaxation. They provide a calming visual that can help reduce stress without overwhelming the viewer with constant motion. Zhang suggests that for those navigating the challenges of remote work, a nature-themed image background might be the ideal choice, offering a serene backdrop that fosters focus and minimizes cognitive load.
